The Bruins basketball team suffered a tough road loss on Tuesday night as the team fell to Johnson & Wales University 111-89 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Four players scored in double figures for the Bruins but it wasn't enough as the team falls to 3-3 on the season.
"Our games against Johnson and Wales are always tough," Bruins Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "Again, we try to schedule superior opponents who will test us and show us what we need to improve on early in the season. We have not had a chance to work on the things that were revealed because of all the closely scheduled games but we have a week of practice to get healthy and get better at our weaknesses."
The Bruins came into the game on the heels of splitting two games last weekend with a win over Berea College and a loss to Asbury University. The Bruins hit the road on Tuesday night as they faced the Wildcats who came into the game at 3-6 on the season and were in the midst of a five-game losing streak.
Henry Blair opened the scoring for the Bruins with a three as the game was off and running. The Bruins and Wildcats exchanged baskets and the lead early on before the Wildcats went on a run to take a 25-15 lead.
The Bruins battled back as they worked through their offensive progression to get high percentage looks. After Stephan Hugley sunk a jump shot, the Bruins had battled back to trail 34-31 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.
Still, the Wildcats continued to maintain the lead and closed out the first half strong. Kenney Garrick hit a three for the Bruins with just seconds remaining in the half as the team trailed JWU 52-43 at halftime.
In the second half, the Bruins came out looking to battle back but the Wildcats went on a 13-3 run to open the half and extend their lead. The Bruins tried to keep pace but the team couldn't slow the scoring of the Wildcats as the clock continued to wind down.
With just over seven minutes to play, Jaylen Benson-Hollin hit a three for the Wildcats to push the lead to 94-69. Although the Bruins were able to go on short runs, the team wasn't able to come back as they fell to the Wildcats 111-89.
Henry Blair led the Bruins with 27 points in the game while Stephan Hugley and Hayes Brush each had 16 points in the loss. The Bruins struggled to contain the Wildcat offense as JWU shot 65% from the floor including nearly 50% from beyond the arc.
Next up, the Bruins will return home on December 17 as the team welcomes Brevard College to the Davis Field House. Tip-off for the game is set to begin at 12 p.m.
