The Bruins were back in action on Saturday afternoon as the team battled region opponent Toccoa Falls College in a doubleheader. The two teams went back and forth but the Screaming Eagles were able to edge the Bruins 4-1 and 8-4 on the day.
"We continue to show progress and I'm proud of our guys," Bruins Head Coach Brent Casteel said. "We just couldn't put up runs when we needed them today."
The Bruins came into the doubleheader on the heels of an 8-4 win on Friday night. Henry Wallach pitched his second complete game of the season while Daniel Barcena carried the Bruins going 3 for 3 in the win. The team was hoping to finish out the weekend with a series win as they took the field on Saturday afternoon.
Josh Legnard would be on the mound for the Bruins in game one and the freshman came out strong with good pitching from the start. The two teams went back and forth before Zach Burk singled home a run to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning.
The Screaming Eagles battled back in the bottom of the third as a pair of doubles and a triple helped Toccoa score three runs and take a 3-1 lead. Toccoa would add another run in the 4th while the Bruins began to struggle offensively as the team couldn't get the runs to keep pace. As a result, Toccoa was able to hold off the Bruins and win 4-1 in game one of the doubleheader.
After a short break, the two teams were back on the field to decide who would take the three-game series. Jerry Dunwoody would pitch for the Bruins in the second game of the day.
The Bruins came out strong from the start as Conley Burk hit a double to score two runs and give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. Colby Hogan helped the Bruins defensively as the second baseman had a pair of great plays to keep Toccoa off the board. Jerry Dunwoody continued to pitch well for the Bruins as the team looked to extend their lead.
Toccoa would tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning as a triple and two doubles tied the game at 2-2. The Bruins were able to regain the lead in the 4th as Bryson French and Chad Bayne each drove home a run to make it 4-2.
Again, Toccoa would rally to tie the game at 4-4 before taking their first lead of the game thanks to a single to make it 5-4. The Screaming Eagles then extended their lead thanks to a homerun in the 5th as they pushed the lead to 7-4.
The Bruins tried to get back into the game, but the team left key runs on base throughout the remaining innings as Toccoa would finish off the Bruins 8-4 to win game two of the doubleheader.
Next up, the Bruins will be on the road on Tuesday night as they face Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina.
