The Bruins volleyball team opened the 2022 season on Saturday night as the team competed in the Battle of the Blues intrasquad scrimmage. The fans were out to support the team as nearly 200 showed up for the scrimmage at the Davis Field House.
"We just began practice on Wednesday, so we haven't been together that long," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "Half of the team is brand new and even our returners are pretty young so I'm pleased with how hard they played tonight. We saw a lot of good defensive plays tonight, and I think we'll have a lot of options this season."
The team would be mixed between returners and freshmen and the freshmen team made the most of their debut as they won the first three sets (25-23, 25-18, 25-21).
The teams then played one additional set mixing up each side with different combinations of players. Although some returners were sidelined with injury, the teams produced several great highlights from both sides.Â
The fans got to see their first glimpse of the talented recruit class for this season. The newcomers will join a core group of returners as the Bruins look to win their fifth-straight NCCAA DII National title this season.Â
"We need to keep growing but it was a good first showing and we're looking forward to next week,"Â Coach Denny said.
The Bruins will play three more preseason matches prior to the open of the regular season on September 2. Next up, the Bruins will welcome Johnson University (TN) for a preseason scrimmage at the Davis Field House on August 27.
The match will be the first time the two teams have met since last year's national championship game.Â
