The Bruins volleyball team will begin the regular season on the road this weekend as the team competes in four matches in the Cougar Classic at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. The team enters the regular season after a strong showing in preseason as the team went 1-1 in competition.

The Bruins look to begin the season strong as the team begins pursuit of their fifth-straight NCCAA DII national title. The team wrapped up the 2021 season at 31-7 overall including going 8-0 in region play for the season.

The Bruins will play two matches on Friday to begin the 2022 regular season. First up, the Bruins will face William Peace University at 2 p.m. The Pacers had a strong 2021 campaign as the team finished 19-13 on the season before coming up short in the USA South Conference tournament. This will be the third meeting between the Bruins and Pacers with WPU winning both previous matchups.

In the second match of the day, the Bruins will battle Roanoke College at 4 p.m. This will be the second meeting between the two programs in their history and the first since the 2019 season. The Maroons come into the 2022 season after finishing 12-19 last year and falling short in the ODAC Quarterfinals to Randolph-Macon.

On Saturday, the Bruins will round out the weekend road tournament with two additional matches. The Bruins will play tournament host Averett University at 9:30 a.m. The Bruins defeated Averett 3-1 in their last matchup during the 2019 season. The Cougars had a dominant 2021 campaign as the team finished 24-8 on the season before coming up short in the conference tournament quarterfinals to Southern Virginia University.

The last match of the weekend pits the Bruins against Meredith College at 11:30 a.m. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Meredith finished the 2021 season at 23-8 before coming up short in the conference final against Southern Virginia University.

"We're facing some good teams this weekend," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "Our girls have worked hard this preseason and have given a great effort and we're excited to begin the season."

The Bruins will begin the regular season against a strong lineup of NCAA D3 competition. Follow the tournament page for links and information about the competition this weekend.
