Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Kaitlyn Unruh

Bruins Beat Cougars Back at Home

Back at home, the Bruins claimed another victory as they beat the Averett University Cougars 3-1 at Alumni Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina, With today's win, the women's soccer team improved to 5-1 on the season.

"I am incredibly proud of how well the team responded after losing our first game this past Saturday," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "They showed great resolve to finish this game for the win. Averett has a strong team and really put us back on our heels for a long stretch of the game, but we were able to get a golazo of a goal by Gaby Gonzalez who laced the ball into the back of the net to put the game away."

The women's soccer team came into today's game after splitting the weekend on the road in Greensboro, North Carolina.

They got off to a quick start today as Anna Grace Abrams set up a corner kick and placed it to the back post of the goal where Rylee Johnson was there to knock the ball past the Cougars goalkeeper giving them the early 1-0 lead. At the 29th minute, Mia Marks doubled the lead for the home team off a long pass from Kayle Stevenson.

The Cougars got on the board with 10 minutes remaining in the first half on a shot from outside the box. The first half ended with the Bruins leading eight shots to the Cougars' six.

As the second half got underway, both teams were looking for their next goal. Averett was knocking and continued looking for the equalizer, but the Bruins continued to hold them off.

With 13 minutes remaining in the game, Gabriela Gonzalez sent a rocket from outside the box to lift the Bruins' lead to 3-1. Gonzalez's goal sparked some momentum and Mia Marks almost recorded a brace with a great shot that ricocheted off the cross bar.

As the ref blew the final whistle, the Bruins finished the game on top moving to 5-1 on the season.

"It was one of those games where we knew collectively we could play better," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "I think we started great and got back to our game plan in the first 20 minutes. I think the rest of the game we were chasing a bit. We need to get a little more consistent and get back to a solid possession and fix the dynamics on the field, but they did a great job getting the win."

Up next, the Bruins will travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina where they face off against Methodist University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
