Women's Cross Country Team Sees Solid Performance at Firetower Project Run

The women's cross country team made the trip up to Boone, North Carolina to compete in the Firetower Project Run 5k race Friday afternoon. In the field of competitors were several NCAA Division I schools like Coastal Carolina, UNC Charlotte, College of Charleston, and host school Appalachian State.

"The team faced really strong competition today and responded well," said Head Coach Ken Roach. "On the women's side our top five girls were able to position well and cut a minute and a half off of their average team time. I think this meet really helped set the tone for the rest of our season."

Joanna Lain crossed the finish line first for the Bruins with a time of 20:46.40. Teammate Sarah Alferink followed behind just eight seconds later. Joy Hast ran a personal best of 21:03.48 to come in third for Bob Jones. Rounding out the top five finishers for the women's program were Margaret Snyder and Liesl Heinz.

The women's top five athletes finished within a minute of each other, to see a solid finish for the Bruins. Full results from Friday's 5k can be found here.

The women's cross country team will have a week off from racing before they travel to Morrow, Georgia to compete at the Asics XC Invitational hosted by Clayton State University on October 1.
