Women's Cross Country Team Opens Season Under the Lights in Bruins XC Night Classic

Under the lights of Bob Jones University and in front of an impressive spectating crowd, the women's cross country opened their 2022 season with an exciting run at the Bruins XC Night Classic. In their first race of the year, the women's team finished 3rd out of five schools racing in the 4k race.

"We knew it was going to be a fun race tonight, and hopefully this is going to set us up well for the rest of the season," said Head Coach Ken Roach.

Starting on the soccer fields on the back campus of Bob Jones, the women's team would get off to a quick start as they ran around the fields and back through the woods in a updated 4k course.

Joy Hast crossed the finish line first for the Bruins with a time of 17:17.5. Three runners back was teammate Sarah Alferink who finished 10 seconds later. Finishing together was Leisl Heinz and Joanna Lain who come in third and fourth for the women's team. Rounding out the top five for the Bruins was Margaret Snyder.

Looking at tonight's meet, Coach Roach said that the team looked good and relaxed while still pushing and racing hard. "I think that's about all we can ask them to do right now," said Coach Roach.

The Bruins finished in third behind Montreat College who swept the field sending in the first six runners of the women's race and Southern Wesleyan.

Full results from tonight's race can be found here.

Next up, the women's cross country team will travel to Boone, North Carolina to race in the Firetower Project Run hosted by Appalachian State University.
