The Bob Jones University Bruins battled the Stormy Petrels until a goal in the 87th minute sealed the deal for the Bruins giving them the 1-0 win against Oglethorpe University Tuesday afternoon. With today's victory, the women's soccer team is now 6-3 on the season.
"I am extremely proud how the team stepped up in the second half and played a great game against a strong Oglethorpe team," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "Each player contributed to this win, and I couldn't ask for a better effort to get this result."
The Bruins looked to get off to a quick start and were awarded a corner kick just over three minutes into the match. They continued to pressure in the first half, but at the end of the first 45 minutes of play, the score remained deadlocked at zero with the Bruins leading in shots 10-3.
Once again, the Bruins looked for the go ahead goal and pushed throughout the second half seeing several promising chances.
As time started winding down, the Bruins continued on and in the 87th minute, their efforts were rewarded as Sylvia Cummings served a beautiful cross to find Francesca Peters who headed the ball into the back of the net for the game winning goal. The Bruins held on for the final minutes to come away with the 1-0 victory against a strong Oglethorpe team.
"The team dug deep, stayed organized and remained patient in the attacking half," said Carmichael. "We were creating a lot of scoring opportunities in the second half and it was just a matter of time before we would break through a very organized and compact defense. We still have a lot of work to do in the attacking third but we are creating opportunities and we will keep building off of that. Our defense was stellar and steered away most of the threats they had and were able to build the attack under pressure. Hats off to Oglethorpe for playing a great game."
The Bruins led on the score sheet with 28 shots while holding the Stormy Petrels to only six throughout 90 minutes of play.
Following the game, Francesca Peters said, "I am so happy that our team pulled through with the win today. This was an important game to win, and we got it done! As a freshman on this team, I can say 100% this is the most supportive team I've been on."
It will be a quick turnaround as the women's soccer team travels up to Harrisonburg, Virginia to play Eastern Mennonite University Wednesday afternoon.
