In front of their home base at the Davis Field House, the Bob Jones University women's volleyball team extended their win streak with a 3-0 sweep against Pfeiffer University on Thursday. With today's victory, the Bruins have won six games in a row and have improved to 13-5 on the season.
"I thought we played very well tonight," said Head Coach Vickie Denny. "Pfeiffer is a good team that runs a really quick offense which we don't usually see. We had to adjust our defensive play, but we got into that rhythm pretty quickly and hung with them well. Overall, I thought our team played really well tonight."
The Bruins came into the match following a 3-0 victory against Toccoa Falls College earlier in the week. Pfeiffer University entered the match 4-12 overall and were coming off of a 3-0 conference loss to William Peace University Tuesday night.
Thursday marked the fourth match between the two programs as the game got underway in Greenville, South Carolina.Â
In the opening set, the two teams saw a lot of back and forth action to get the game underway. About halfway through the set, Timbre Cruz put down three consecutive kills to see the Bruins slowly pull away to give them the 15-11 advantage. The Bruins attack was able to find the holes in the Falcons defense which allowed them to increase their lead. The Bruins held on to their lead and came away with the 25-17 set win.
As the second set got underway, Pfeiffer looked to flip the script as they went on an early five point run to get the 7-2 lead over the Bruins. But after a couple of attack errors on the Falcons, the Bruins came back within two points. After a back and forth effort by both teams, the Bruins saw themselves down 21-18. Bob Jones then went on a six-point tear to bring them to set point. Pfeiffer kept their chances alive after Emma Riddle sent the ball just outside the line. Looking to close out the set, Kiersten Hoopes set up her sister Katherine to come away with the kill and secure the 25-22 set two win.Â
The home team looked to complete the sweep and as the third set got under way, the Bruins earned an early 8-3 lead following some errors by the Falcons followed by kills from Timbre Cruz and Faith Blalock. The Bruins gained a seven point gap, but the Falcons began chipping away at that lead. Costly mistakes at the end cost the Falcons as the Bruins completed the sweep with a 25-21 set win.Â
Three Bruins players ended the night with double digit kills as Timbre Cruz led with 11 and Katherine Hoopes and Faith Blalock each came away with 10. Timbre Cruz also saw 19 digs on the night while Kiersten Hoopes finished the night with 42 assists.Â
"We're still a pretty young team, so with every match we want to learn, develop, and group. And tonight I feel like we were able to do that," said Denny. "We look to bring that into this weekend and are looking forward to two great matches on Saturday."
Up next, the Bruins will welcome Paine College and Carolina University to the Davis Field House for a tri-match on Saturday.Â
