The Bob Jones University men's soccer team opened their 2022 season on the road but fell 2-1 to Concord University in Athens, West Virginia.
"Tonight was a tough result and a reality check for our team," said Head Coach Greg Fulton. "We had some really great spells of attacking possession but overall made too many mistakes which let them into the game."
The Bruins had a couple of good looks as the match got underway, and in the 18th minute Mario Figueroa scored after a deflection off of his first shot. As the Bruins and Mountain Lions went into the break, the Bruins led with seven shots to Concord's three.
After halftime, a foul was called on Sam Gaddis as he worked to get the ball out of the Bruins defensive zone giving the Mountain Lions a free kick. Concord University leveled the score off the free kick as Joel Walker sailed the ball into the back of the net.
Both teams continued to work for the deciding goal, but it was Concord University who came away with the game winner in the 71st minute.
"Ultimately we must take the good and the bad and continue to grow," said Fulton. "This one stings as it was a game we should have won, but we will not waste the opportunity to learn."
Up next, the Bruins come home to Alumni Stadium as they host Brevard College Saturday night for an 8:00 p.m. kickoff.
