Neither team could find the back of the net as the Bob Jones University women's soccer team and Piedmont University Lions fought to a 0-0 draw in Demorest, Georgia. With Monday's result, the Bruins sit at 8-1-6 on the season.
"I am really proud of a very gutsy performance by the team," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "We continued to improve in many areas, especially possession and pace, and I thought we created a number of great goal-scoring opportunities but just couldn't find the net tonight. We had much better balance and mobility and our backs did a phenomenal job keeping a very strong Piedmont team at bay and were able to push up and overload the midfield and half spaces which created some challenges for them."
The Bruins made the trip to Georgia Monday night to kick off the week against Piedmont University. They didn't have much recovery time after Saturday's 2-1 loss against Georgia Southwestern State University.Â
Bob Jones and Piedmont last met in 2019, where a late second half goal saw the Lions take the 1-0 win.Â
As Monday's game got underway, both teams looked for early scoring opportunities. Bob Jones and Piedmont each tallied five shots in the first 45, but went into halftime scoreless.Â
Both teams went to work in the second half to break the deadlock, but at the final whistle the game ended 0-0.Â
When speaking of tonight's match, midfielder Reagan Tierney said, "in the first half we were playing slow and had trouble getting into a rhythm, but after halftime we picked up our speed of play. I'm proud of the team for the way we stuck together, and were able to create a few chances but we just couldn't convert."
"Although the outcome wasn't what we wanted, the team gave 110% effort the entire game (even though we were fighting circumstances outside our control)," said defender Jane Farr. "We were able to keep possession and control most of the game, and I thought it was one of our best overall performances so far. Hopefully we can continue to fine-tune our style of play and keep our momentum heading into the offseason."
Following the game, Coach Carmichael spoke of his team saying, "Jane Farr did a phenomenal job creating creating overloads in wide and half spaces and was able to create alot of great opportunities for the team. Margaret Cummings made a game-saving full extension save to keep us in the game and was able to connect well with our midfielders. Reagan Tierney has been playing very well this season and had another stellar game anchoring our attacks and defending extremely well. Like our last game I thought we were doing enough and getting a strong sense of urgency to get the winning goal but just couldn't find the back of the net but was a great performance against a very strong Piedmont team. We need to quickly recovery for our regional game against Toccoa Falls tomorrow night."
It will be a quick turnaround as the Bruins are back home on Tuesday night for a NCCAA South Regional match against Toccoa Falls College from Alumni Stadium.
