Asher Aurednik tallied two goals Tuesday night as the Bruins battled to a 2-0 shutout victory over Guilford College at Alumni Stadium. With today's win, the Bruins have improved to 6-3-1 on the year.
"I am really proud of the team and how they fought tonight," said Head Coach Greg Fulton. "It was a really scrappy game where we again dominated the statistics. Guilford did a great job adjusting in the second half and made possession really difficult ultimately forcing us to make some pretty bad mistakes. Through it all our team did a great job keeping a clean sheet."
The Bruins came into today's game off of a tough 2-1 loss at William Peace University over the weekend. Today's game marked just the second meeting between the Bruins and Quakers with the first match dating back to 2019 where the Bruins fell 2-1 to Guilford College.
As today's game got underway, the Bruins battled the Quakers for control in the early minutes.
With just under eight minutes remaining in the first half, David Issa tapped the ball away from a Guilford defender where Sandro Martinez collected and sent it towards the end of the field to Asher Aurednik. Aurednik crossed the ball past the keeper in to the back of the net to put the Bruins on the scoreboard for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The intensity picked up in the second half as Guilford pressured for possession and a goal of their own. After goal-scoring opportunities on both sides, it was Asher Aurednik once again in the 88th minute as Anthony Ruiz slid the ball to Aurednik who's shot went past two defenders to increase the Bruins advantage.
The 2-0 lead held through the final minutes to see the Bruins take their sixth win and third clean sheet of the season.
"We know the game wasn't pretty but when it comes to winning a tournament these are the games we have to win," said Fulton. "We will continue to focus on learning and growing while celebrating the victory!"
The Bruins are back at home on Saturday for a 7 p.m. Homecoming match against Emory & Henry College.
