The Bruins are back on the road this weekend to face the Guilford College Quakers. This is the second meeting ever between these two volleyball programs and the second time they'll meet this season. The Bruins welcomed the Quakers to the Davis Field House in mid-September to take part in the BJU Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The Bruins went 3-1 during that weekend invitational with their lone loss coming from the hands of the Quakers. They will look to rebound to even the series with the Quakers.
The Quakers are coming off a conference matchup against Hollins University. In a fierce matchup between the two teams, the Quakers would pull ahead just enough to squeak out a win. Hollins played them close, even threatening to take a couple of sets away. The final was 25-23, 25-20, and 25-23 with all three sets going in favor of the quakers. With that win, the Quakers sit at 13-5 this season.
The Bruins had a couple of home matches this week. On Tuesday, they played Johnson and Wales University where the Bruins finished them off 3-0. Thursday night, the Bruins played Warren Wilson for a three-set match. Having no problems at all, even while down their starting setter to injury, they pulled away in each of the three sets for a victory. The Bruins improved to 18-3 after the win against the Owls.
Guilford College is part of the NCAA DIII where they participate in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The last matchup between the two teams was an exciting one! You could feel the pressure from both teams as they battled it out on the court. The first set went to Guilford, but then the Bruins responded well by taking set two. Already knowing they would have to play a fourth set, both teams were determined to win the next so they would have the advantage going into the fourth. Guilford took a small lead on the Bruins and won the third set 20-25. With time running out, the Bruins knew they needed a win to force a fifth set. A tight race to the finish found the Bruins fall just short of the goal for a 23-25 loss. Bruins fell in that match 1-3, but gave it everything they had in what had been one of their toughest matches of the season.
The rematch between the two teams will be on Saturday, October 7th, at 1:00 p.m. You can watch that game
