In their 2023-24 home opener, the Bob Jones University men's basketball team secured their first win of the season in a convincing 91-72 victory over Brevard College. Three Bruins scored double figures with Elijah Cupples leading the way with 26. With today's win the Bruins are now 1-2 on the season.
After two road games to kick off their season, the Bruins were back in Greenville searching for their first win of the season. The Bruins entered the week 0-2 after narrow losses to two top NCAA DIII teams over the weekend.Â
Coming into today's game, the Bruins owned the 4-3 series record over Brevard College. The Tornados made the trip to Greenville on the hunt for their first win of the season after falling to Montreat College on Friday.Â
Camden Gearhart got the scoring started for the Bruins just seconds into today's contest. Through the opening minutes, the two teams exchanged buckets until Brevard hit back-to-back-to-back three pointers to take the lead. Their slight lead didn't last long as Elijah Cupples responded from the arc to put the Bruins back within one.Â
With under five minutes remaining, the Bruins went on an 11 point run. Their lead held through the end of the first half and the Bruins went back to their locker room at halftime on top 46-37.
The Bruins defense held strong in the second half while the offense went to work jumping to a 25 point lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game. While the Tornados worked to chip away at the Bruins advantage, the Bruins stayed strong and at the final buzzer finished with the 91-72 victory.Â
Today's result was the largest victory in the Bruins vs Brevard series. Elijah Cupples led the Bruins with 26 points followed by career highs by Devin Pope (19 points) and Camden Gearhart (17 points).Â
"91 points stands out," said Head Coach Burton Uwarow. We had several guys in double figures. When we have the scoring spread around like that, we tend to do really well and it's hard for the other team to prepare for."
The Bruins were shot 86% from the free throw line, were 53% from the three-point line, and 63% from the field.Â
"In almost every category, we did better except for turnovers where we had 19 and they had 12," continued Uwarow. "That was the story of our first two losses, having more turnovers than our opponent. It's definitely something we need to get better at going into our game on Saturday."
Up next, the Bruins welcome Johnson & Wales University to the Davis Field House for a noon tip-off on Saturday.
