The women's basketball team traveled to Winston-Salem, North Carolina tonight for a game against the Salem College Spirits. The Bruins had their sights set on getting into the win column, but fell just short in a 72-74 game.
The first quarter was a bit of a struggle for the Bruins as they fell behind 2-10. They made a great effort by pulling with one in a 12-13 battle, but with the final two minutes of the quarter the Spirits took a 12-17 lead. Going into the second quarter, the Bruins played a much stronger game. They were able to find their stride and get into a rhythm. Despite the Spirits holding the lead for most of the game, the Bruins took the lead with 60 seconds remaining. The half closed on a 3-point shot from Beth Clark to make the score 40-37.
The start of the second half, the Bruins were able to keep a lead for most of the third quarter, but lost it with two minutes remaining. Going into the fourth quarter, the Bruins were behind 61-64, but never were able to retake the lead over the Spirits. The game finished 72-74 Salem College as the time expired.
"This game was a step in the right direction, but it still is one that leaves an awful taste in our mouth," began Head Coach Mike LeViere. "We almost won the game which is a really positive thing when you take into account that this team is 5-0 and we know we can play so much better. That is really encouraging. It was a step in the right direction and we have to maintain that focus."
