It was a beautiful afternoon for baseball as the Bob Jones University Bruins welcomed St. Andrews University to Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina for their home opener. The Bruins fell 5-3 in a close game to move to 2-3 on the season.
"Last year, this team was difficult for us and a challenge. I didn't know what to expect tonight, but as usual they shocked and surprised me as they came out with a bang," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "We swung the bats well and were aggressive on the base pads, and saw some great defensive plays. In addition, our pitching was phenomenal. We had some guys who didn't pitch a lot last season as well as one of our rookies get the opportunity."
The Bruins came into today's contest looking to bounce back after a tough 16-2 loss to Covenant College on Saturday. St. Andrews entered the week with a 2-5 season record. After defeating Brewton-Parker in a narrow 8-7 decision on Friday, St. Andrews fell in back to back games on Saturday. Last season, the Bruins and Knights met three times with St. Andrews holding the 3-0 series record.
Reid Giggleman got the start on the mound for the Bruins and had a solid start to get the game underway. The game remained scoreless through the first inning. As the bottom of the second rolled around, Cody Kirkpatrick walked to get on first. Up next to the plate was Kam Lance. Timing his hit perfectly, Lance sailed the ball over the left field fence for his first home run as a Bruin to give his team the 2-0 advantage.Â
BJU held on to their lead until the top of the fourth where St. Andrews came back to even the score. The Knights added two more runs, but the Bruins didn't back down. After Zay Brandt was hit by a pitch to get on base in the bottom of the fifth inning, Riley Ramsey responded with a clutch double play. Josh Hill of SAU walked Conley and Zach Burk to send Zay Brandt home and see the Bruins cut down the Knights lead to 4-3.
The Knights got one more run in the eighth inning to take the two run lead. The Bruins continued to battle, but fell 5-3 to St. Andrews University.Â
Following the game Coach Casteel said, "we're looking forward and seeing some exciting things happen. I'm thankful for the way the team fought tonight."
Up next, the Bruins will travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to face Carolina University for a weekend series beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
