Despite outhitting the Eagles 7-1, the Bob Jones University Bruins saw their time at the NCCAA South Region tournament come to an end with a 3-1 loss to Trintiy Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida.
"Daniel Williams and Noah Weaver did a great job holding Trinity to just one hit, but a few mistakes defensively and a lack of timely hits produced our final loss," said Head Coach Brent Casteel when speaking of today's game.
The Bruins entered today's game after a loss to Carolina University Monday morning. In that game, the Bruins and Carolina University remained evenly matched throughout, but a five-run inning in the top of the seventh was too much for the Bruins to overcome. Trinity Baptist College came in to Tuesday's game after Toccoa Falls College handed them an 18-1 defeat.
Today marked the eighth meeting between the two programs. They last met on May 9, 2022 where the Bruins came away with the 4-1 win.
In the top of the second, the Bruins saw back to back to back singles from Daniel Barcena, Gabe Swarms and Cody Kirkpatrick to load the bases. After Chad Bayne struck out swinging, Zay Brandt walked to score Barcena and put the Bruins up 1-0. A double play by the Eagles ended the inning for the Bruins and left two men stranded on base.
As the Eagles came to bat in the bottom of the second, the Bruins looked to hold on to their narrow lead. An error by the Bruins followed by two walks saw the bases loaded for the Eagles. Bruins pitcher Daniel Williams looked to retire the inning, but a balk was called and the Eagles were able to score one and even the game. Another error by the Bruins allowed two more runs to score and see the Eagles take the 3-1 lead.
The Bruins looked to get one back in the third as a double from Daniel Barcena sent Pablo Austin racing towards home plate, but Austin was caught right at home ending the inning for the Bruins.
Noah Weaver then came in to relieve Williams in the bottom of the third. He held the Eagles to just one hit through the rest of the game. As the Bruins looked to rally back, they fell short and ended their season with a 3-1 loss at the NCCAA South Region tournament.
