Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Kaitlyn Unruh

Late Goal Gives Bruins the 1-1 Draw in Season Opener

The Bruins battled back from a 1-0 deficit with a game-tying goal late in the second half to tie the game and earn a 1-1 draw in their season opener Friday night against Brevard College.

"Today was all about testing ourselves against a two time conference winner," said Head Coach Greg Fulton. "We were focused on making progress from our preseason knowing this was a tough test. We played really well and aside from a few mistakes were clearly the better side. I am incredibly proud of the team for fighting until the end and equalizing late!"

The men's soccer team came into today's contest after playing a couple of preseason matches on the road. Today's match against Brevard College would be the third in program history with Brevard coming away victorious in each of the previous matches.

As the game got underway, both teams battled to get a feel for each other as both sides looked for the opening goal. With each team only recording two shots each in the first 45 minutes, Bob Jones and Brevard went into the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0.

Just three minutes into the second half, a misplay by the Bruins goalkeeper gave Ryan Lynch of Brevard the ball as he cut around the Bruins defense and sent the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal to give the Tornados the 1-0 advantage.

The Bruins didn't back down and continued to look for goal-scoring opportunities. As the clock was ticking into the final minutes, the sense of urgency picked up and with less than five minutes remaining on the clock, Hodari Twishime fired the ball into the back of the net to put the Bruins on the board.

With Twishime's goal, the Bruins finished today's game with a 1-1 draw.

"We have a quick turn around before a second tough test against another conference winner," said Fulton. "We will focus on recovery and building on the positives!"

Up next the men's soccer team will travel to Lookout Mountain, Georgia for a mid week match against Covenant College September 5.
