Neither could find the back of the net Monday evening as the Bob Jones University Bruins and Averett University Cougars played to a 0-0 draw in Danville, Virginia. With today's result, the Bruins remain undefeated with a 2-0-3 season record.
"We had a tough time getting traction in today's game and had too many technical breakdowns which lead to too many breakdowns that we had to fix," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "Defensively we were solid again and just need to have more patience in our buildup and attacking half. Averett played a hard-fought match and created a lot of challenges and defensively we did a very good job limiting their shots on goal. We obviously need to generate more quality goal scoring opportunities and that is something that will be our focus. Despite the challenges we had in this game our chins are up, and we are still undefeated."
The Bruins came into today's game just two days after their Saturday home opener against Covenant College where Gabriela Gonzalez converted on a penalty kick to see the Bruins take the 1-0 lead over the Scots. The lead held until a second half goal by Covenant would even the score again and both teams would leave the pitch with a tie. Today's game marked the third meeting between the Bruins and Cougars with the Bruins coming away victorious in their previous meetings.Â
As the game got underway, the Averett University Cougars began pressuring early looking for a good start against the Bruins. The Bruins defense held strong only allowing two shots on target.Â
With ten minutes remaining in the first half, the Bruins earned a free kick and as Gabriela Gonzalez sailed the ball on frame, the Cougars' keeper mishandled the ball almost allowing the Bruins to come in the box and score. But at the halfway point, the score still remained 0-0.
After the break, both teams came out with some intensity looking to break the deadlock.Â
"Shannon Miller came in the second half and did a fantastic job stabilizing our midfield and was starting to link up well with our wingers and striker and began creating a number of late goal scoring opportunities," said Carmichael.
Unfortunately, the team wasn't able to finish those chances and after sending 11 shots towards the goal, the game finished in a 0-0 draw.
"I'm very thankful for a 100% effort from the team, especially in the second half as we continued our undefeated streak," said midfielder Shannon Miller. "Unfortunately, we lacked execution on some great chances this game, but I'm extremely hopeful that we'll capitalize on those next game."
"Despite some tactical challenges we had, I am incredibly proud of the team for fighting to the end and for generating a number of great opportunities until the final whistle," said Carmichael.Â
Up next, the Bruins will travel to Columbia, South Carolina for a 1 p.m. Saturday contest at Allen University.
