Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Joseph Gehman

Bruins Win First Two in Opening Night of Volleyball Invitational

The winning streak continues for the Bob Jones University women's volleyball team as they won back-to-back games to win six straight and improve to 10-1 on the season. In their first home games of the season, the Bruins hosted Grace Christian University and Boyce College at the Davis Field House for day one of the BJU Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

The Bruins got off to a hot start to the weekend as they crushed the Grace Christian University Tigers 3-0. In the first set, the Bruins would jump out to a 12-1 lead before forcing the Tigers to use one of their timeouts. It wouldn't matter though as the Bruins would cruise to a 25-6 set win. As the second set would get under way, it was a back-and-forth battle between the Bruins and Tigers. Victoria Glaze would lead the Bruins to their second set win with six kills scattered throughout the 25-21 win. Moving into the third set, the two teams would be locked into an even matchup before the Bruins would find a rhythm. After finding that rhythm, the Bruins would make quick work of the Tigers to finish the set 25-13 and take the 3-0 win.

"We have been talking about being ready and focused when we start a match and for the first time this season we started out strong in match one," said Head Coach Vickie Denny. "That gave us great momentum to get the sweep against a good Grace team."

In the second match of the night, the Bruins would face another tough team in the Boyce College Bulldogs. The crowd was electric as the Bruins and Bulldogs battled it out on the court. Despite the Bulldogs playing close in each set, the crowd was enough to fuel the Bruins to win in the first two sets and take a 2-0 lead. As the third set got underway, the Bruins jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but the Bulldogs couldn't be stopped in a tug of war set. The Bruins would be edged out by the Bulldogs in a 23-25 set. As the Bulldogs continued to play spoiler, the Bruins couldn't be stopped in a close fourth set. The crowd noise was enough for them as they would take the winning points and end the match 25-19 from a kill by Faith Blalock.

"I am incredibly proud of our team tonight," Coach Denny commented. "Being able to close out the fourth set was huge for us to get the win. We had a great crowd cheering for us which always makes for a fun atmosphere."

The Bruins are back on the court on Saturday with two more games to round out the weekend tournament. They will face Clinton College at noon before taking on Guilford College at 4 p.m. from the Davis Field House.
