The Bob Jones University men's soccer team won their second straight game in a 2-1 decision against Pfeiffer University from Alumni Stadium Saturday night. With tonight's results, the Bruins have improved to 2-2-1 on the year.
"Pfeiffer was one that we were building towards," said Head Coach Greg Fulton. "I gave our players three key objectives for them to focus on tonight and if they did these things, they'd win this match. They won those three areas and were able to get the 2-1 victory over a tough opponent in one of our hardest games of the year."
The Bruins came into today's home match on the heels of a 3-2 win over Erskine College on Tuesday. The Bruins and Pfeiffer Falcons would meet for just the third time in program history with both teams each winning a game in their previous matchups.
As today's game got underway, the Bruins looked to take control early. They looked for several shots early in the game, but in the 22nd minute their time would come as Ian Arendse stepped to the side of the field to take a corner kick. He sent the ball deep and it bounced around a bit before Dallas Albert settled it and slotted it right into the back of the net to put the Bruins ahead 1-0.Â
After halftime and in the 64th minute, Pfeiffer settled the ball on the far side of the field and then sailed it on frame where Anthony Ruiz would misplay a header in front of the goal giving the ball right to the feet of Karim Ndiaye who evened the score with a shot that got past goalkeeper Cameron Braswell.Â
The Bruins didn't allow Pfeiffer to gain momentum. Just seven minutes later, James McCarty sent the ball up the field where Rylan Boldt collected the ball and raced down the field looking for a shot. Boldt was tripped up in the box but the ball rolled to the front of the net where Malachi Ray-Tharpe was there to follow through and tap the ball into the goal to see the Bruins regain their lead.Â
After 90 minutes of play, the Bruins came out victorious in the 2-1 decision from Alumni Stadium to pick up their second straight win.
Following the game, Coach Fulton spoke of what he's taking from this game into next week. "It's momentum. It's now two games in a row that we've won and we're back on winning ways. The second part is that we're building confidence. Guys on the team are now understanding what we can be even though it wasn't perfect. We're going to take that into next week and try to set the tone for the region."
Up next, the Bruins will travel to Toccoa Falls Tuesday night for their first NCCAA South Region match of the season.
