The Bob Jones University men's basketball team remains undefeated in 2024 with a 97-79 win in a NCCAA South Region contest against Toccoa Falls College. With today's victory, the Bruins have improved to 7-3 on the season and 3-0 in region play.
Â
The Bruins took the lead early in Tuesday's game as Camden Gearhart opened the scoring to put BJU ahead. It was a back and forth effort as Toccoa Falls worked to keep it close through the fast paced game.
The Bruins began to pull away and saw a double digit lead courtesy of a three pointer by Trevor Brunson lead with six minutes left in the first half. Another three by Hayes Brush advanced the Bruins to their largest lead of 13 a minute later.
With just over one minute remaining, Shad Vander Hart intercepted the ball and raced to the basket with a dunk to liven up the crowd. Vander Hart then closed out the first half with a spin move around two defenders under the basket to send the ball into the basket and give the Bruins the 49-35 advantage.
Â
After the break, Hayes Brush drained his opening three point shot to start the second half. The Bruins maintained their double digit lead and with 9:22 left in the contest, Elijah Cupples got the four point play after he was fouled on his three point shot to improve the Bruins lead to 76-63. He followed that with another bucket outside of the arc. With seven minutes left, Trevor Brunson stopped a big three point attempt by the Screaming Eagles with a big block. A dunk by Vander Hart in the final seconds put the exclamation point on the night as the Bruins captured the 97-79 win.
Five Bruins finished in double figures. Elijah Cupples led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds followed closely by Shad Vander Hart with 21 points, Trevor Brunson with 19, Hayes Brush with 16, and Kenney Garrick with 12 on the night.Â
"We responded with almost another 100 point game and five players with finished in double figures," said Head Coach Burton Uwarow. "We lost our starter Camden Gearhart to injury tonight and Toccoa Falls lost one of their main players to injury as well. Unfortunately that's part of the game. I thought we responded well and really extended the lead in the second half."
Up next, the Bruins host another region rival as they welcome Pensacola Christian College to the Davis Field House Friday evening.Â
