The Bob Jones University women's basketball team fell in a hard-fought 59-68 decision to Johnson & Wales University Friday night in Charlotte, North Carolina. Keely Price led the Bruins with another double double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
"This was a tough game to sum up," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "We shot the ball fairly well. We competed against a perennially good team. We out rebounded them. But in the end our youth showed as we couldn't overcome the turnovers."
Â
The Bruins entered today's contest looking for their first win of the season after falling in their season opener to Columbia College last Saturday.
Â
As today's game got underway, the Bruins got on the board first as Keely Price made her free throw following a team technical on the Wildcats. She followed that up with a jumper to put the Bruins ahead 3-0. The Bruins continued to maintain their slight edge before the Wildcats evened the score 11-11. With less than a minute on the clock, Johnson & Wales took the 16-14 lead before Caitlyn Dickerson's layup wrapped up the first quarter at 16 points a piece.
Â
A three-pointer by Caitlyn Dickerson put the Bruins ahead on the board to open the 2
nd quarter. Â The Bruins remained competitive throughout the second quarter, and after falling behind by six points, the Bruins battled back to go into halftime down 32-35.
Â
After the half, jumpers by Keely Price put the Bruins behind just by one point, but the Wildcats continued to increase their lead. At the end of 30 minutes of play the Bruins found themselves down by 12 points.
Â
The Bruins continued to compete in the final quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 17 to 14. In the end it was Johnson & Wales who finished ahead 68-59.
Â
Following the game Coach LeViere said, "The first quarter was a good synopsis of the whole game as we led most of the quarter but end up down three due to our own mistakes and giving up easy buckets. We are growing and getting better and I'm happy with the effort. These young ladies are working hard and they are a fun group. As they continue to grow and learn to stop beating themselves, they are going to be fun to watch!"
Â
Up next, the Bruins are back in the Davis Field House for their home opener against Brevard College on November 8.
