It's banner season as the Bob Jones University women's volleyball team captured their eighth NCCAA DII South Region Championship win in program history with a 3-0 sweep over Pensacola Christian College.
"Our team stepped up today and played with purpose and focus," said Head Coach Vickie Denny. "We played some outstanding defense against a hard hitting PCC team. Our blocking was incredible and when they hit around our block we had great defensive digs. I am proud how far our team has come this season. They have demonstrated great growth from our opening tournament to this regional competition. We are thankful we aren't done yet and get to travel to Nationals!"
The Bruins entered Saturday's game on the heels of a 3-0 victory over #4 Trinity Baptist College to advance to the title match. They would face off against #2 Pensacola Christian College who won their semifinal match against #3 Toccoa Falls College in straight sets.Â
As today's game got underway, Pensacola grabbed the first few points of the set before the Bruins went on a run to take the 9-5 lead. The Bruins soon saw themselves leading 20-13. A kill by Bethany Estell sealed the set one win 25-15 in favor of Bob Jones.Â
The Bruins and Eagles exchanged points top open the second set before the Bruins once again increased their lead. A service error by PCC gave BJU the set point in the 25-18 second set win.Â
The Bruins needed just one more win to seal the region championship victory. They began set three 6-1, but the Eagles battled back and tied the game at 7-7. It remained tight as the Eagles worked to stay in the game, but ultimately it was the Bruins that finished on top 25-22 securing the NCCAA DII South Region Championship victory. Â
With today's region championship win, the Bruins have punched their ticket to the national tournament in Joplin, Missouri where they will battle for their seventh straight national title November 20-23.Â
