The Bob Jones University women's basketball team fell in a 74-62 decision to Sewanee Thursday evening. With today's loss in Sewanee, Tennessee, the Bruins now sit at 4-6 on the season.
"We were soft with the ball and turned it over and then we didn't shoot the three ball very well," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "We competed hard but have to have more composure with the ball. If we turn turn it over we either have to out rebound the other team or shoot a really good percentage. We didn't do either one which resulted in the loss on the scoreboard."
Thursday's game marked the first of three games in three days across three states for the Bruins.Â
After two quick back-to-back baskets to open the game by Sewanee, the Bruins put on the pressure defensively to force several turnovers and even the game at 4-4 with baskets by Keely Price. Price went into the paint for another layup to give the Bruins their first lead of the game. Hayward and Price again put the Bruins ahead to take the 12-7. The lead didn't hold long as the Tigers went on a 13-0 run to regain the lead. The first 10 minutes of play finished with the Tigers leading BJU 20-16.
Â
After trailing at the start of the second quarter, the Bruins regained the 24-23 lead halfway through the second off of an early 6-0 run. While it was a low scoring quarter, the two programs went into halftime with Sewanee leading 29-25.
Â
Anna Layne Wylder sank a shot from the three-point line to begin the third quarter. It was Wylder again with another shot from outside the arc to put Bob Jones ahead with the slight lead. It was a back-and-forth effort throughout the quarter and at the buzzer, the quarter ended with the Tigers leading by seven points at 51-44.
Â
It was Wylder again with a crucial three-pointer to open the final 10 minutes of play. A jumper by Kayley Trump pulled the Bruins within two points three minutes into the fourth quarter. Sewanee pulled ahead to an 12-point lead, their largest of the game with just under five minutes remaining in the contest. Jenna Brooks broke the run by Sewanee with an impressive behind the back basket after a couple of free throws. The Bruins continued to work in the final minutes, but were unable to get the points needed and at the final buzzer fell 74-62 to Sewanee.
Three Bruins finished the game in double figures with Keely Price leading the way with 18 followed by Jenna Brooks with 15 and Anna Layne Wylder with 11.Â
Despite the loss, Coach LeViere said that there were still some positive things that happened. "Some really pretty offensive possessions and our defense was spot on at times. As we continue to mature as basketball players we're only going to get better and better as a team."
Up next, the Bruins travel to Lookout Mountain, Georgia for a Friday night game at Covenant College before wrapping up the semester with a home game on December 14.
