Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Joseph Gehman

Bruins Shut Down Rival PCC Eagles

The Bruins notched their 15th win of the season after defeating NCCAA South Region rival Pensacola Christian College 63-58. It was a defensive and physical battle by both teams, but the Bruins quick passing and accurate shooting was able to get the job done.

"Our bench was the difference in this game," began Head Coach Burton Uwarow. "We had 27 points off the bench to their 15."

The men's basketball team traveled down to Pensacola, Florida for their second away game in three days. Following the women's basketball game, the Bruins went straight into a defensive battle with the PCC Eagles. Both teams got off to a slow start, but things began heating up in front of a fierce crowd.

The Eagles started out with a 7-0 run over the Bruins. Shad Vander Hart helped get the Bruins back in it with several layups. The majority of the first half was back and forth with the Bruins taking a small lead over the Eagles at the 8:47 mark. As the two teams continued to duke it out, the Eagles would come within a possession before the Bruins would score again to extend the lead. At the end of the half, the Bruins led 35-28.

It was a quiet start to the second half of the game, but the Eagles made it 35-32 before the Bruins scored their first points off the hands of Shad Vander Hart and got the and one to put the Bruins up 38-32. For the next several minutes, the Eagles played some great defense forcing unnecessary turnovers and mistakes by the Bruins. The Eagles went on a run and were able to tie the game at 41 with just over 12 minutes to play.

After a loose ball, a Bruin landed on it, but a shove by a PCC player gave the Bruins two free throw attempts and another possession. During that possession, the Eagles were playing some stiff defense, but as time expired Eli Cupples knocked down a three. At the 10 minute mark the Eagles regained a 47-46 lead. Hayes Brush responded a minute later knocking down a three to put the Bruins back on top. With five and half minutes left, the Bruins had regained a 10 point lead. In the final minutes, the Eagles made a desperate attempt at a comeback, but they couldn't catch up. At the final buzzer, the Bruins finished on top 63-58.

"I was really proud of how we kept our composure. We had an awful shooting night on Thursday night, and today we were able to turn that around," said Coach Uwarow. "We shot well from the field, the three-point line, and from the free throw line."

Up next, the Bruins are coming home for their last home game of the season. The Bruins will host Warren Wilson College on Monday at 7:00 p.m. from the Davis Field House.
