Bruins Fall to Concordia University

The Bob Jones University baseball team closed out their home series against Concordia University Monday afternoon in a 26-5 decision.

"Due to errors and walks, we gave up too many free bases, and our bats couldn't catch up," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "I'm thankful that the team kept their heads up and continued to fight!"

First pitch of Monday's contest got underway at noon from Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina. The Cardinals got on the scoreboard early going up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. After leaving two runners stranded on base, it was the Bruins time to go up to bat. Riley Ramsey flied out to short stop in his first at bat. Evan Walker and Angelo Gomez worked to get the Bruins on the board but each grounded out to third base.

Concordia doubled their lead to 2-0 at the top of the second. J.C. Poe, Pablo Austin, and Stinson Draper all singled to open the bottom of the inning. After Matthew Wells struck out at his at bat, Chad Bayne was hit by a pitch scoring Poe to put the Bruins on the scoreboard. At his first at bat of the game, Zay Brandt's two RBI single gave the Bruins the 3-2 lead.

After the Cardinals tied the game in the top of the third, Angelo Gomez crossed home plate off of Draper's ground out to third to knot the game at four runs a piece.

The Cardinals pulled ahead in the top of the fourth, recording four runs to put them ahead 8-4. The Bruins kept the Cardinals off the board in the top of fifth as they looked to rally. On the 2-1 pitch, Evan Walker sent the ball flying into left field for a double. He stole third and then with an error by the catcher, raced to home plate where he scored the fifth run of the game for BJU.

Concordia University continued to rake in the runs and at the conclusion of the ninth inning pulled ahead to see the 26-5 win. With today's loss, the Bruins now sit at 0-6 on the season. The Bruins are on the hunt for their first win of the season and are back in action at Conestee Park on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game against Columbia International University.
