The Bob Jones University women's basketball team dropped Tuesday's contest to the Warren Wilson Owls. With today's 64-61 decision, the Bruins now sit at 11-12 on the season.
"From the very beginning of the game it was evident we weren't focused tonight and the result reflects that," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "We couldn't stay focused and gave up key offensive rebounds and didn't execute defensively. Credit Warren Wilson with a good game plan defensively."
As today's game got underway from the Devries Athletic Gymnasium in Asheville, North Carolina, Shea Dickinson was fouled early and went to free throw line where she sank both shots to put the Bruins on the board. Throughout the first quarter, the Bruins held on to a slight advantage and in final minutes Anna Layne Wylder and Catherine Skebo drained three point shots to go up 15-8 after 10 minutes of play.
BJU opened the second quarter with eight straight points to build a 15 point advantage. As the two teams went into the halftime break, the Bruins held on to the 30-19 lead.
As the third quarter started, the Owls were hot from the three point line and cut down their deficit to single digits. After Warren Wilson got within one point, a layup by Katrina Tabora in the final seconds put the Bruins ahead 50-47.
Six unanswered points by the Owls saw them take the lead early in the fourth quarter. The advantage flip flopped throughout the next five minutes. It was 61-58 in favor the Bruins with 90 seconds left on the game clock. But in the final minutes of the contest, the Owls rallied to overtake the Bruins and finish in the win colum 64-61.
"We couldn't finish at the rim and at this point in the season if we don't take advantage of the opportunities at the rim you aren't going to be successful," said Coach LeViere. "Another sign of the lack of focus is the turnovers. We threw crazy passes and unforced error after unforced error resulted in 26 turnovers for us against a team that wasn't pressing. Hopefully we use this as a wake up call and get focused on being the team we can be."
Katrina Tabora finished the game with a double double recording 14 rebounds and 10 points. Two other Bruins saw a double digit finish with Bria Dickinson leading the way with 13 points and Catherine Skebo with 12 points on the day.
Up next, the Bruins travel to Pensacola, Florida to take on NCCAA South Region rival Pensacola Christian College in a Saturday afternoon game.
