In their first game back at Conestee Park in over a month, the Bob Jones University Bruins fell in a 11-8 decision to Truett McConnell University. With today's result, the Bruins sit at 5-17 on the year.
"It's hard to go up to our team and tell them they did a good job when we lost the game, but we really have grown," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "Truett McConnell has always been a torture to us if you will, and played us really hard. But tonight that changed. We're a much better team than we think we are, and when we get out here and buckle down and do the things we have the ability to do, then good things will happen. We just couldn't hang on, but some great things happened tonight."
The Bruins got off to a hot start in today's game, looking for their first ever win against the Truett McConnell University Bears. Mikey Terribile got the nod on the mound as the defense by the Bruins sent the Bears back to their dugout scoreless after their first trip the plate.Â
In the bottom of the second, Pablo Austin, Cody Kirkpatrick, and Sam Gonzalez each singled to load the bases for the Bruins. As Zay Brandt came up to bat, he flied out to center field but allowed Austin to score putting the Bruins on the board.Â
As the third inning rolled around, it was back to the top of the order as Riley Ramsey and Evan Walker each singled before Conley Burk doubled scoring Ramsey. An RBI single by Kam Lance scored Walker putting Bob Jones ahead 3-0. Two more RBI singles by Pablo Austin and Cody Kirkpatrick added two more runs to the Bruins total in the third.
Truett McConnell looked to make a move in the top of the fourth. After their first batter got walked to first, the Bears hit a two RBI home run to get on the board.Â
It remained 5-2 through the next few innings until Chad Bayne scored for Bob Jones in the bottom of the sixth. Evan Walker sent the ball out of the park for his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the seventh to put the Bruins ahead 8-2.Â

A late rally by the Bears put them within two as they scored four runs in the top of the eighth. Their rally continued with five more runs scored in the top of the final inning. After holding the lead most of the game, the Bruins needed a comeback to close out the game. Unfortunately, they were unable to get any additional runners home and they fell to Truett McConnell with a final score of 11-8.Â
When asked about the positive takeaways from today's game, Coach Casteel said, "Mikey Terribile came in today and did a fantastic job against a very powerful hitting team. Number two was, we go against a team like this and our team's bats were on a roll. They were making some great things happen. We always say, make the basic defensive plays, get the bat on the ball, and go up and place your pitches and get the job done. We did that well all game long until we got to the end and crumbled a little bit."
Up next, the Bruins are back at Conestee Park for a weekend series against Paine College beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
