The Bob Jones University Bruins baseball team defeated the Trinity Baptist College Eagles in Jacksonville, Florida in a close 7-6 contest Friday night. Henry Wallach pitched a complete game and helped the Bruins pick up their seventh win of the season.
"Fantastic night for the guys who came after it. Henry Wallach pitched a whole complete game and did a great job on the mound for us and our bats finally found the holes," said Head Coach Brent Casteel. "I'm very proud of them. Our defense was tough tonight and did their job despite a couple of errors and we were able to get through it."
The Bruins kicked things off right away in the first inning with Kyle Prouse reaching first after getting hit by a pitch. In Evan Walker's first at bat, he flew out to left field and shortly after Prouse stole second base. Conley Burk reached first base with a walk to get two men on. Kamden Lance struck out swinging in his first at bat and then JC Poe reached on a fielder's choice with both runners advancing. With the bases loaded, Cody Kirkpatrick grounded out to second and the inning would end before any runners could score.
Henry Wallach got the nod to start on the mound for the Bruins tonight. The Eagles got on the bases quickly with a triple after their first batter lined out to right field. A single would bring him home to take the early 1-0 lead. Gavin Williams from the Eagles stole second and thought he had a great jump towards third as the ball got past the infielders, but a bullet from Evan Walker in centerfield caught the runner to hand the Eagles their second out of the inning. Wallach finished the inning with a walk and popout in the infield.
The Bruins started off the second inning with Sam Gonzalez getting on base with a single and he would tag up to second after a flyout from Chad Bayne's bat. With one out and one man on, Isaiah Brandt smoked a ball that carried all the way over the fence to get the Bruins a two-run home run. A couple more singles by the Bruins to get on base, but couldn't make anything of it before the inning ended. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bruins went to work letting up only a single and the Eagles would come out empty.
Going into the third inning, the Bruins held a 2-1 lead, but they were hungry for more. JC Poe started the inning off with a walk to reach base. A popout and flyout made it look like it was going to be short inning, but Chad Bayne barreled one deep to right center for an RBI triple. A couple of pitches later, Bayne would score on a wild pitch to give the Bruins a 4-1 lead. Brandt kept the inning going reaching first on an error from the third baseman. He then stole second and made it to third with a single by Prouse. Evan Walker kept it going with another single and Brandt would score to give the Bruins a 5-1 lead. With a single by Conley Burk, the Bruins scored again extending their lead to 6-1. The Eagles had seen enough, and they brought in a reliever to get out of the inning. The Bruins left two runners stranded, but quickly ended the third with three up and three down.
It was a quiet middle of the game as both teams went scoreless until the ninth with the Bruins tacking on another run to extend their lead once again. With a 7-1 lead, the Bruins needed just three outs to record the win. The Eagles had other ideas though.
The Eagles quickly loaded the bases with a single, walk, and a hit by a pitch and no outs. A single would drive two runs in to cut the lead down to 7-3 and then a double drove in another to make it a three run game. After quick walk out to the mound by catcher Cody Kirkpatrick, the Bruins recorded their first out of the inning as Wallach faced the next batter. Another double by the Eagles scored two more runs and cut the Bruin's lead again down to 7-6. A groundout and flyout would do it for the Bruins as they narrowly escaped the Eagles.
Up next, the Bruins will continue the series with the Eagles in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and can be viewed live
