A fantastic night for the Bruins baseball team as they picked up their tenth win of the season. In a predetermined 10-run rule, the Bruins finished the night after eight innings in a 11-1 win over the Mid-Atlantic Christian University Mustangs. Henry Wallach received the nod to start on the mound for the Bruins. He finished the night pitching all eight innings allowing a single run to score off six hits and striking out four batters.
"The guys decided to turn it on and that's what we've been talking about," started Head Coach Brent Casteel. "I knew they had the ability, but sometimes when something negative would happen in the game, it would pull them down. I was a little concerned when the home run was hit, but tonight we showed a new us. That's what I've been looking for and that's what I want them to keep looking for."
The Bruins opened up the evening with a leadoff double from the returning bat of Riley Ramsey in the bottom of the first. Two outs and Ramsey standing at second, Kam Lance reached first after an error by the short stop. Next up, Pablo Austin doubled to send Ramsey home and advance Lance to third. The inning would end after Cody Kirpatrick flied out to left field, but not before the Bruins were able to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Bruins got back on the basepaths in the bottom of the third when Riley Ramsey singled. A triple from Conley Burk scored Ramsey to go up 2-0 and he would come home after a fielder's choice caught Kam Lance out at first. With two down, a fly out after the run from Burk ended the inning.
Going into the fourth inning, Cody Kirkpatrick started out with a single and Kyle Prouse was brought in as a courtesy runner. A single from Sam Gonzalez advanced Prouse to second, but the pair would get left stranded as the next three batters couldn't extend the inning.
Evan Walker lead off in the bottom of the fifth with a double and Conley Burk was walked to get two on base with zero outs. A sac fly from both Kam Lance and Pablo Austin scored Walker to extend the Bruins lead to 4-0, but Burk was stranded on the basepaths at the end of the inning.
The top of the sixth brought the Mustangs their lone run of the evening with a solo home run off the bat of Jalyn Lee. In response, Riley Ramsey hit a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the seventh inning. That brought up Evan Walker who was walked and then Burk was walked still with zero outs. A wild pitch advanced both runners before the mustangs recorded the first out of the inning. A third walk loaded the bases and in a strange turn of events, the Mustangs were caught sleeping allowing two runs to score off their errors. The Bruins then took a 8-1 lead when Cody Kirkpatrick hit another single and scored Pablo Austin. Kyle Prouse came in to run for Kirpatrick again and scored after the Mustangs committed another error from a single by Sam Gonzalez. With Gonzalez at second from the error, he advanced to third and then scored on another error by the Mustangs to take a 10-1 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the Mustangs looked to clean up their game and loaded the bases threatening to score, but Henry Wallach and the Bruins defense worked some magic to get out of the inning without allowing a run to score. Riley Ramsey started the inning with another single, followed by Evan Walker who was walked and Conley Burk who singled. A sac fly by Kam Lance brough Ramsey home and the Bruins won 11-1. Altogether, the Bruins finished with 13 hits and five walks while the Mustangs finished with six hits and three walks.
Coach Casteel remarked, "Every inning we were going after it with the bats. Henry Wallach did a fantastic job in his final home game here as a Bruin and did a great job, so I appreciate him being out here as well."
Up next, the Bruins will close out their regular season and honor their graduating seniors before playing Mid-Atlantic Christian at 12:30 Saturday afternoon. Be sure to visit Conestee Park to see the Bruins in action for their final home game.
Speaking on tomorrow, Coach continued by saying, "We have come and do the same thing we did today. Just go after it pitch by pitch by bringing our bats and gloves and play fundamental baseball. We do that and I think it will go well."
