Bruins Fall Short in Back-and-Forth Battle Against the Eagles

The Bob Jones University Bruins and the Pensacola Christian College Eagles put on an all-time battle tonight in the Davis Field House Friday night as the Eagles came out on top with a late game-winner to win the game 74-73.

The first half was controlled by the Bruins. Devin Pope led the way with 13 points while shooting 7-8 from the free throw line. The Bruins were able to out-rebound, force more turnovers, and go into halftime with a 43-32 lead. The highlights of the first half were two monstrous dunks, one by Devin Pope and the other by Shad Vander Hart. Vander Hart tallied nine points in the half.

Though the Bruins kept the lead for the first five minutes of the half, the Eagles clawed back into it one possession at a time. The Eagles were able to knot it up at 50-50 with just over 12 minutes to go in the game. From here on out, the largest lead either team had was six points. The second half was filled with gritty basketball played by both teams. With five minutes to go, the scored was tied at 60 a piece. The Eagles held a slight lead until the final minute of the game when Brandon Wilkins put the Bruins up one from the free throw line. The Eagles responded from the free throw line themselves taking the lead back with 20 seconds left in the game. The Bruins had the ball and Devin Pope drove into the lane and laid it in to take the lead back causing the Eagles to call their last timeout. This timeout proved successful as the Eagles answered back with the game-winner to take this game on the road with a final score of 74-73.

Devin Pope led the Bruins with 25 points followed by Shad Vander Hart and Trevor Pittman both scoring 13. Vander Hart added nine rebounds and five steals to his night.

There is no rest for the weary this weekend as the Bruins are back in action tomorrow at the Davis Field House at 3:00 p.m. as they take on the Warren Wilson College Owls.
