The Bruins came away with a much-needed bounce-back victory this afternoon against the Warren Wilson College Owls with a final score of 101-79.
"I loved our rebounding performance," Head Coach Burton Uwarow said. "Everyone played and contributed well today."
The Bruins controlled the game right from the tip. They got out to a quick double-digit lead and never looked back. Each time the Owls went on mini runs, the Bruins answered right back with a flurry of their own. Devin Pope had another spectacular game for the Bruins scoring 18 of his 28 total points in the first half. The Bruins went into halftime with a 48-39 lead after the Owls were able to cut it to a single-digit lead.
The Bruins did not take a glance back in the second half and just grew their lead larger and larger. Every single Bruins player that played today scored in the second half. The lead stayed steady until the Bruins were able to break it open with easy layups from breaking the Owls' attempted press. This game, and the second half especially, allowed for most of the team to play quality minutes.Â
As a whole, Devin Pope led the team in scoring with 28 points. Devin Dean, Trevor Pittman, and Braxton Murray all followed scoring double-digits. The 10 points scored by Murray was a season and career high for him. The Bruins out-rebounded the Owls 37-31 and forced 16 turnovers to the credit of the great defense displayed especially by the guards.
Coach Uwarow credits his bench players for playing well today saying, "I was very happy with the way they played today. They are vital to our success moving forward."
This win was important for the Bruins as they now move into a crucial part of their schedule. They have nine games remaining, eight of which are NCCAA South Region games. They play next on Tuesday, January 21 at 5:00 p.m. at home in the Davis Field House against the Toccoa Falls College Screaming Eagles.
