Bruins Fall to Averett University 73-62

The Bruins were back in action on Saturday afternoon as they hosted the Averett University Cougars in a 1 p.m. contest in the Davis Field House. Bob Jones wrapped up their weekend with a 73-62 loss to Averett. With today's result, the Bruins sit at 5-10 on the season.

"Obviously, this was a tough game coming back from a big game 18 hours prior and being short-handed," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "For us, the story of the game was great defensive stands followed by an offensive rebound by Averett. It is super frustrating for these young ladies to work so hard and execute defensively really well but give up that rebound. As always, we will keep working and get better tomorrow."

Today marked the first ever meeting between Bob Jones and the NCAA DIII Cougars.

Diamynd Bucksin's early layup opened the scoring in today's game. Averett pressed early and scored five points in a row to give them the early advantage. A three from Anna Layne Wylder tied the game at five points apiece. It was Wylder again with another three to even the game again at eight. It continued to be a back-and-forth effort as the two teams exchanged buckets. At the end of the first ten minutes of play, the Cougars led the Bruins 15-11.

After trailing by seven points through the first half of the second quarter, the Bruins began an eight-point scoring run to regain a narrow 23-22 lead. Averett responded with a double-digit run of their own to take back an eight point lead. The two teams went into the halftime break with Averett leading the Bruins 35-28.

In the third quarter, the Cougars took back a double-digit advantage before Wylder recorded five points to pull the Bruins into a two possession game. Averett once again pulled ahead and after 30 minutes of play, led 54-43 on the scoreboard.

The Bruins needed a strong quarter as they entered the final ten minutes of play. Faith Hayward opened the quarter with a layup. Three-pointers by Jenna Brooks and Caitlyn Dickerson worked to close the gap. In the final minutes of the game, the Bruins went 6-6 from the free throw line, but at the final whistle, it was Averett University on top 73-63.

Anna Layne Wylder led all players with 24 points in the contest. The team finished the game shooting 36% from the field, 37% from outside the arc, and 74% from the free throw line.

"This team has been getting better, and it isn't always a straight line, but they know how hard they have worked and they see the improvement," said LeViere.

The Bruins will rest and recover the rest of the weekend before they continue their home stand against Toccoa Falls College next Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Davis Field House.
