Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Trenton Goldsmith

Intense 1-1 Draw at Alumni Stadium

After 90 minutes of battlling, the Bruins and Skyhawks end in a 1-1 draw.

"This is a bittersweet result," Head Coach Greg Fulton said. "The boys battled hard through adversity as the game grew into a very physical contest and we battled hard through fouls and missed calls which is a great lesson for our boys to learn."

The Bruins got out to a hot start just as they wanted to. Going against a tough opponent, they knew they had to strike first to gain control. In just the fifth minute of the match, Bucky Provenzano connected with Sam Gaddis offa rebound from a corner kick. The header goal for Gaddis was his first goal of the season. For the rest of the half, it's almost as if the solid possession for the Bruins fizzled. The Skyhawks got more and more chances, especially on corner kicks and free kicks. Luke Provenzano along with the Bruins defense, though, alleviated those scoring threats, and the Bruins went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

That 1-0 lead lasted quite some time throughout the second half. The possession was back-and-forth between the two teams. The Bruins had a great chance to extend their lead in the 76th minute when Noah Burkett placed a free kick with pace on target, but it ricocheted off the crossbar and was cleared out by the Skyhawks. On the ensuing attack, the ball went out for a Skyhawks throw. As a result, two balls found their way on the field in which players from each team expected play to stop and a drop ball to take place. To the surprise of everyone, especially the Bruins defense, play did not stop, and the Skyhawks took advantaged knotting it up at 1-1. The final 10 minutes of the match were constant attacks from each team, but they both came up empty. The match ended in a wild 1-1 draw.

"Ultimately these games build character that we will need at the end of the season," said Coach Fulton. "We have been playing very difficult teams and we finally have a well earned rest before attacking the second half of the season."

The Bruins are back on the pitch next Tuesday, October 7 when they travel to Newberry College for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
