The Bruins charged through region opponent Southeastern Baptist College to pick up their first win of the season on the road in Laurel, Mississippi by a final score of 87-68.
"Road wins in the region are always tough, especially early on in the season," said Head Coach Tony Miller.
As the game began, the Chargers had early fortune from the three-point line making three straight to start the game. Due to that, the Bruins found themselves in an early deficit, but it did not last long. Once the Bruins turned up the intensity with their zone defense, they forced a lot of turnovers and came back quickly. Diving on the floor led to easy points on the other side for the Bruins. Brandon Wilkins got hot with a couple straight three-pointers and the Bruins had a 10-point lead going into halftime. The first half introduced Bryson Felder to Bruin Nation; he scored 10 points in his debut.
The Bruins kept their momentum and extended their lead throughout the second half. The Chargers were able to bring their deficit back to six points, but a Justin Skelton three opened it back up. Skelton led the Bruins in scoring today with 18 points on 50% shooting. The Bruins defense was much to credit for the lead extension, especially when Conner Barfield and Trevor Pittman were at the top of their zone defense. Pittman ended the game with three of the 16 total steals by the Bruins! Barfield ended with one steal but plugged driving and passing lanes. To add to his performance, he ended the game with 13 points, a career high.Â
Coach Miller loved that every Bruin touched the court today and had the chance to get contribute to the 87-68 win.
The Bruins are back on the court this coming Thursday night when they take on Erskine College in a scrimmage at the Davis Field House with a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
