The Bob Jones University women's volleyball team advanced to their eighth straight NCCAA National Championship game after taking a 3-1 win over #3 Pensacola Christian College in Friday night's semifinals of the national tournament in Joplin, Missouri.
Today's semifinal match marked the third meeting of the season between the Bruins and Eagles. In each of the previous two matches, Pensacola finished ahead to win each game.
From the first serve of Friday night's match, Pensacola came out strong and scored the opening four points for the Eagles. But the Bruins didn't back down and soon came back to equalize at 8-8 off of a Bruins block. It remained close through the next few points, but PCC went on a 9-1 run to take the first set 25-17.
After trailing 6-2 early in the second frame, the Bruins capitalized on errors by the Eagles to take the 7-6 lead. The two teams exchanged points before a late push by Bob Jones helped power through to a 25-21 set two win.
In the third set, the Bruins used momentum to gain a 12-7 advantage. They held on to that lead and finished strong 25-17 to take the 2-1 match lead.
Looking to finish strong, the Bruins opened the fourth frame ahead 4-3 after a big Bruins block. Bob Jones went on a five point streak to take the lead. They continued to play well and pulled ahead to a 22-17 lead. Several timely kills and big defensive plays secured the 25-18 set win and 3-1 match victory for the Bruins.
With today's 3-1 win, the Bruins have clinched their spot in the NCCAA National Championship match.
"To God be the glory," said Coach Christa Schlichting following today's game. "Today was a great team win. Our captains stepping up to lead and a strong defensive effort with multiple people contributing helped propel us to the win over Pensacola Christian College. We will now look ahead to tomorrow's championship match against Manhattan Christian College."
Tomorrow, the Bruins enter the title match for the eighth straight time as they face off against the top-seeded Manhattan Christian College Thunder for the second time this tournament. The championship match is set to begin at 2 p.m. in Joplin, Missouri. Full tournament information can be found
