It was a thrilling night at Alumni Stadium last night as the Bruins secured their spot in the region championship game in a thriller against the Trinity College of Jacksonville Eagles winning 3-2.
"We have to play better on Saturday," Head Coach Greg Fulton simply said. "Glad to get the win in a very important match for our season and excited for a chance to be at the top of the region again."
Going into the match, many thought the Bruins were going to be able to run away from the Eagles. Beating them 6-1 in the regular season, the Bruins went in with confidence, but so did the Eagles. Right out the gate, it was the Eagles attacking and getting chances to score and take an early lead. The Bruins escaped those attacks, and the score remained 0-0 for 30 minutes. That draw was broken in the 32nd minute when Noah Burket, who played a great match, got the ball on his dominant foot right outside the 18-yard box. The shot was impossible to stop, and the Bruins took a 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, Pierre Jean Philippe, who returned to the field last night after missing some time injured, made his presence known and scored to make it 2-0. The comfort on the Bruins side was becoming larger, but the fight on the Eagles side was growing as well. In a blink of an eye, the Bruins lead vanished. In a one minute span in the 40th and 41st minutes, the Eagles scored two goals to tie it up and Alumni Stadium went quiet. The halftime score was 2-2.
The score remained 2-2 the majority of the second half and the intensity at the stadium and for viewers at home grew. Both teams had chances to take the lead, but could not. Then with only seven minutes remaining in the game, a familiar hero comes up clutch for the Bruins again. In the 83rd minute, Bryce Ramler got a clear shot in the box and put it in to take the late 3-2 lead. The Eagles could only show desperation by sending it up the field in hopes of a breakthrough, but due to great defending, they could not tie it back up.Â
The Bruins escaped the upset and will move on to the South Region championship game Saturday night with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
