Eagles Overtake Bruins in South Region Championship Match

The Bob Jones University women's volleyball team battled hard, but fell in a 3-1 result against Pensacola Christian College in the NCCAA DII South Region Championship on Saturday in Pensacola, Florida.

The #2 seeded Bruins started the game out well and pushed to an early 9-3 lead over the top-ranked PCC Eagles to force PCC to take an early timeout. The Eagles worked to claw their way back, and tied the game late at 20-20. Bob Jones didn't let up defensively and regained a slight lead. A kill by Lyndsey Cassell sealed the 25-23 set one win for the Bruins.

In set two, the programs kept it close through the opening points. PCC soon took the lead with a five point run, but the Bruins adjusted and responded to cut the deficit and take the lead with a 11-2 run. Late in the set, the Eagles knotted the score 23-23. The teams continued to battle for points, but back-to-back attack errors by Bruins saw the Eagles take set two 28-26.

As the third frame got underway, the two teams exchanged points to keep the score fairly close. As the set continued, PCC scored six straight to see the Bruins trailing 24-15. Three kills by Stefanie Burke plus an attack error by the Eagles allowed the Bruins to close the gap, but it was PCC who put away the set to take the 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set, the Bruins put together another good effort, but in the end it was Pensacola who took the set 25-17 to win the match 3-1.

The team now waits to see if they have earned an at-large bid to the NCCAA DII National Tournament held in Joplin, Missouri on November 18-22.

"It was a tough loss for us today as we battled against Pensacola," said Coach Christa Schlichting. "Congrats to them for earning the regional banner. As we wait to see if we receive an at-large bid to nationals, we will continue to work together to become a better team."
