The Bob Jones University baseball team picked up their first win of the season as they split the doubleheader against Ohio Christian University. Game one of the day resulted in a 4-3 walk off win before the Bruins fell in a close 3-2 result in game two from Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina.
"Coach McDonald with Ohio Christian summed it up perfectly, this year is about resilience. We're just excited to be out here and this team doesn't take a single day for granted," said Head Coach Kyle Morrison. "Today was a foundational win for us. We got in there and competed with the team and that was good."
The Bruins were back in action against Ohio Christian University for a Saturday doubleheader at Conestee Park. After falling 9-0 on Friday, the Bruins were looking to flip the script.
Mac Carroll got the nod as the starting pitcher for the Bruins. He started out strong with three strikeouts in the top of the first inning.
The Trailblazers were the first to get a run across home plate in the second inning. The Bruins responded in the second inning with three runs of their own. Max Lucien, courtesy runner for Cody Kirkpatrick, raced around the bases to get the opening run of the season for Bob Jones. Sam Gonzalez and Elijah Medrano kept the inning alive as they added to the Bruins runs to see them take the 3-1 lead.
The 3-1 score held until the sixth inning where Ohio Christian tacked on two runs to even the score 3-3.
Neither team could send home another run before the end of the seventh as the game went into extra innings.
With two outs on the board and bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Prouse came up to bat. On his first pitch, he hit the ball past the Trailblazers to send a runner home in the walk off 4-3 win.
After a 30 minute intermission, the Bruins and Trailblazers were back on the field. Mackenzie Ritter got off to a hot start with three straight strikeouts to open game two for BJU.
The Bruins got into a little bit of trouble in the top of the third inning as the Trailblazers put two runs on the board. They tacked on another run in the top of the fourth to go up 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bruins knew they had work to do to cut down the deficit. Carroll doubled to get in scoring position. As Bryson French grounded out to shortstop, Carroll advanced to third base. Mannix Crawford reached first on a fielder's choice allowing Carroll to score for the Bruins. With two outs and runners on the corners, Isaiah Brandt came up to bat. He hit the ball on his first pitch giving Gonzalez a chance to race home.
The Bruins battled through until the very end but came up short in with a 3-2 final to go 1-1 on the day.
"We're going to keep competing," said Morrison. "This is a good team, and I'm proud of them and thankful to be here."
Up next, the Bruins travel to Jacksonville, Florida for a weekend series against Trinity Baptist College February 7-8.
