From their home court at the Davis Field House on Thursday, the Bob Jones University women's basketball team picked up a crucial 80-61 victory over NCCAA South Region opponent, Trinity Baptist College. With today's win, the Bruins have improved to 9-14 on the season and 3-4 in conference play.
"This may have been our most complete game of the season tonight," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "We've had to fight through so much injury and deal with sickness and make adjustments, it has been a challenge for the team to find consistency, but tonight we saw that consistency. It wasn't perfect, but from start to finish it was the most complete and balanced game we've played. We had balanced scoring, good rebounding, good defense, a really good flow overall to our offense."
Bob Jones entered today's contest looking for a better outcome after their last game against Trinity Baptist College. The two region programs met at the beginning of February in Jacksonville, Florida where the Bruins dropped a narrow 61-60 contest.Â
Right from tip-off, the Bruins got off to a hot 8-0 start with Caitlyn Dickerson picking up a three-point play with a lay up and the and one opportunity to open the scoring. Throughout the first quarter, the Eagles worked to cut at the Bruins early lead. Trinity Baptist sank a three late in the quarter to get within just two points, but a bucket by Imani Pouncy put the Bruins ahead 24-20 after the opening 10 minutes.Â
Bob Jones opened the second quarter with three straight layups to regain their ten point advantage. Caitlyn Dickerson was fouled right at the buzzer and made both of her free throws to send the Bruins into the locker room on top 45-33 at halftime.
Despite the Eagles out-shooting the Bruins 16-14 in the third quarter, Bob Jones held on to their double digit lead through the frame.
The home team looked for a strong finish to the contest. Keely Price opened the scoring in the final quarter. After the two teams exchanged baskets, the Bruins went on a 14-point scoring run to take a 21 point advantage. At the final buzzer, the Bruins found themselves on top with a final score of 80-61.Â
Four Bruins finished Thursday's contest in double figures with Jenna Brooks leading the way with 24 points followed by Anna Layne Wylder with 19, Keely Price with 15, and Faith Hayward with 10. Price led the team in rebounds as she recorded her seventh double double of the season with 15 points and 15 rebounds.Â
With a great game in the books, Coach LeViere ended the night saying, "and as I told the team: we can still be better."
With the postseason just around the corner, the Bruins go on the road for another important region contest on Saturday against Pensacola Christian College.Â
