Women's Soccer Team Falls to SWU in a 1-0 Decision

Southern Wesleyan University handed the Bruins their first loss of the season in a hard fought 1-0 decision. With today's result, the Bruins are now 0-1-3 on the season.

The Bruins entered today's contest after a weekend of games on Friday and Saturday in North Carolina. Against two strong NCAA DIII programs, the Bruins played to 0-0 draws in each game.

From Alumni Stadium for Monday's Labor Day showcase, the Warriors showed an early offensive threat. In the 17th minute, Amelia Peters' shot couldn't get past SWU's goalkeeper, keeping the score level. At the end of the first 45 minutes of play, the Warriors out-shot the Bruins eight to one.

After the break, the Warriors continued to press and keep the ball in the Bruins defensive zone. In the 72nd minute, Southern Wesleyan got the ball past goalkeeper Margaret Cummings to go up 1-0 over Bob Jones.

In the final few minutes of the contest, the Bruins worked to tie the game, but at the final buzzer, the Bruins came up empty falling to the Warriors 1-0.

"This was a tough loss as I thought we could have and should have out played them," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "We were just not getting the job done in possession and forcing way too many turnovers. Our technique continues to let us down, and tactically nothing is going to go well until we get sharper with our first touch and passing quality."

He continued saying, "the good news is that our work rate is solid, but we have to start seeing improvement in possession and more patience in the attacking half and seeing opportunities to play into the space behind the opponents' back line. It was there all night, and despite talking about it, we just didn't execute and ultimately that's on me as the head coach."

Looking ahead, Carmichael said, "now we focus on the Greensboro game on Wednesday as it doesn't get any easier after this over the next couple of weeks. The strength of our schedule should more than prepare us for region play and the NCCAA South Region Tournament, and to that end, we need to improve in some key areas that are a trademark of our style of play. This is an amazing team, and I am more confident than likely the players that we are going to eventually click and turn the corner. We have had many very successful years that started much worst, so all is good and look forward to competing on Wednesday."

On Wednesday, the Bruins travel to North Carolina to take on Greensboro College at 4 p.m.
