The Bruins women's soccer team came up short on the road Monday evening, falling 3-1 to Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee despite holding the edge in nearly every statistical category.
"This was an extremely disappointing outcome as I thought we were the better team, but we failed miserably in the important moments of the game that cost us three goals," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "We held the majority of possession and controlled the tempo of the game and had so many positives, but in the end, we conceded three goals. My hat goes off to Bryan College for taking advantage of their opportunities."
Today's game marked the first-ever meeting between the Bruins and the Lions.Â
Throughout the first half of the match, the Bruins sent seven shots towards the net while only allowing one shot by Bryan College in the first 45.Â
Just 16 seconds into the second half, the Lions broke the 0-0 deadlock to put Bryan College on the board. Just three minutes later, the Lions doubled the advantage, giving them a 2-0 cushion. The Lions scored once more to extend their lead in the 80th minute and make the score 3-0.
The Bruins continued to push forward and finally broke through in the closing minutes. Illa Tomko's shot hit the back of the net in the 90th minute, spoiling the shutout. Despite the late spark, time ran out on the Bruins comeback as the Bruins fell 3-1.
Following the game, Carmichael continued saying, "our technical breakdowns and tactical miscues continue to kill momentum we are trying to achieve during the game, and this is really hurting us badly. We will be okay going into October, and ultimately it's on me to help the team to reach our full potential which I know we haven't come close to reaching yet. We are still trying to find the combination of players that can best play our style of play and which system works best with the personalities we have on the team. The coaching staff is dedicated to helping our team through this challenging time. Fortunately, this is a fantastic group to experience this valley with, and I know the mountain top view will be even better with this team."
With today's game, the Bruins move to 2-5-5 on the season. Up next, the Bruins are back home on October 10 for a game against Carolina University.Â
