The Bob Jones University women's volleyball team fell to both Baptist University of Florida and Ohio Christian University to wrap up their weekend as hosts of the NCCAA Region Kickoff tournament in Greenville, South Carolina.
Saturday's contests began at 10:00 a.m. in the Davis Field House as the Bruins faced off against Baptist University of Florida. It was a back-and-forth battle through most of the opening set. Tied at 25-25, the BUF Eagles finished it out with two final kills to take set one 27-25.
Set two mimicked much of the first one as the two teams exchanged points throughout. Once again, it was the Eagles who finished on top with a close score of 25-23.
The first four points of set three went to the Bruins. The Bruins had a strong showing and soon pulled out to a 22-7 advantage. A kill by Stefanie Burke sealed the deal to keep the Bruins in the match with a 25-12 set win.
In the final frame, the Bruins got out to a slight lead before the Eagles responded to overtake the Bruins and eventually win set four 25-23 to take the 3-1 match win.
Later Saturday afternoon, the Bruins were back on the court to face Ohio Christian University.
Ohio Christian stormed out to a dominant first set win, but the Bruins responded by edging the Trailblazers 28-26 in set two. The Bruins carried that momentum into the third, using strong defense and timely kills to secure a 25-20 victory and go up 2-1 in the match.
The Trailblazers answered in the fourth to even things up with a convincing 25-14 win. In a decisive fifth set, both teams traded points in a tense back-and-forth battle, but the Trailblazers pulled away late to seal the 15-13 victory.
Following today's games, team captain Anne Lloyd said, "we competed against some very talented teams this weekend, and we had to work hard to earn every point in each set. We obviously didn't see the number of wins we wanted from this tournament, but we now have an opportunity to adjust and learn from these losses. Being out on the court with this specific group of girls is the greatest privilege. We didn't roll over during any of our tough matches, and I think that speaks to the character of these girls. Thank you to all of our talented competitors for pushing us to be a better team!"
With today's results, the Bruins now sit at 2-7 on the season. Up next, the teams travel to Brevard, North Carolina for a 6 p.m. contest against Brevard College on Tuesday.
