Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Trenton Goldsmith

Bruins Come Up Short in Offensive Battle

In a high intensity offensive battle, the Bruins fell short to the Covenant College Scots in the Davis Field House 96-90.

"Character matters more tonight," Head Coach Tony Miller said after the game. "I'm proud of how hard our guys played and the character they had."

After an opening three-pointer by Brandon Wilkins, the Scots went on an early run to jump out to a double-digit lead in the first five minutes. For the rest of the half, Trevor Pittman was on fire. Scoring 19 points in the half, he knocked down five three pointers while only missing two. The Bruins were able to tie the game back up 16-16 with 12 minutes to go in the first half, and from there on out, neither team held a lead larger than nine. With several baskets from Pittman and strong drives to the basket by Shad Vander Hart, the Bruins maintained a steady lead for the rest of the first half. Vander Hart scored 14 in the first half to go along with Pittman's 19, and the Bruins led 46-42 at the break.

The second half was just as close the first half and stayed as intense too. The Bruins got their largest lead of the game after a pair of free throws from Vander Hart putting them up nine just a few minutes into the half. The lead did not stay, though, as the Scots went on a 9-0 run in just one minute. The rest of the game was back-and-forth offense resulting in 13 total lead changes in the game. After a couple rim-rocking dunks by Vander Hart and some great play in the paint by Braxton Murray, many thought the Bruins would gain momentum but the Scots kept answering. They answered enough to the point the Bruins could not overcome the lead in the final minute. They fell 96-90.

Shad Vander Hart had a career game with 29 points and a career high 15 rebounds. Pittman, though cold in the second half, still finished with 22 points because of his incredible first half. Brandon Wilkins finished the game with a sneaky 16 points followed by Braxton Murray with 10 points all scored in the second half.

The Bruins scored 50 points in the paint tonight against the NCAA DIII leader in blocks, and were able to score 26 points off turnovers.

The Bruins hit the court again next Tuesday, January 27 on the road at Warren Wilson in Asheville, North Carolina. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
