Bruins Defeat Eagles in Big Region Road Win

The Bruins got the win in Jacksonville, Florida beating south region opponent Trinity College of Jacksonville 94-84 is a heavily contested game.

As the game began, many knew it was going to be a high-scoring game with big scorers for both teams, but both offenses looked rushed for the majority of the first half. The stagnant start for the Bruins led to a 10-point deficit late in the half. Down 40-30 with just over four minutes until halftime, a Justin Skelton jumper began a run that would be a key difference-maker as the game went on. The 13-1 run at the end of the half gave the Bruins a 43-41 lead. Skelton led the team with 12 points at halftime and he was far from done.

"The effort and focus to end the first half was something we haven't done to end a half this year," Head Coach Tony Miller said. "That group was +12 [in point differential] on the night."

The Bruins never gave up the lead in the second half, though it remained a single-digit lead the rest of the way. One huge reason the Bruins kept momentum and the lead is how they shot from the free throw line. Sometimes their achilles heel, the Bruins took advantage of the opportunities at the line shooting 29-36 on the game. "Making our free throws is always a big help in close games like tonight," said Coach Miller after the game. Another couple of reasons for the big win were the fires set by Justin Skelton and Trevor Pittman in the second half. Both scoring over 15 points in the half, they always seemed to have an answer for the blows by the Eagles. The Bruins defense remained steady with several blocks that also helped lead to the 94-84 victory against the Eagles.

Justin Skelton continued his incredible season with 33 points tonight which is his third 30-point game of the season. Trevor Pittman followed with 20 points after a blazing second half. Shad Vander Hart did his normal damage of 15 points and eight rebounds. On the defensive side, Braxton Murray finished the night with five blocks.

The Bruins now travel back to Greenville for a Saturday matchup against south region newcomer Baptist University of Florida. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Davis Field House.
