The Bruins returned to the win column Thursday night with a convincing 76-51 victory over Clinton College at the Davis Field House.
BJU set the tone early, racing to a 25-12 lead. Anna Layne Wylder and Jenna Brooks sparked the offense from beyond the arc as the Bruins hit five three-pointers in the first quarter. The Bruins defense held the Golden Bears to just four made field goals in the frame.
The game slowed down a bit in the second quarter. The Bruins pulled to a 17-point lead off of early points, but with each team only scoring nine points each, the Golden Bears were able to work at closing the deficit.
After the halftime break, Clinton College opened the third quarter with a three-pointer to pull within ten. Wylder responded with a three of her own to get the opening bucket for the Bruins in the quarter. With just over three minutes left in the frame, Wylder knocked down another signature three-pointer to hit her career milestone of 1,000 points as a Bruin. She becomes just the seventh in program history to reach this milestone.
With the energy high on the bench, the Bruins closed out the game with confidence, scoring 20 points in the final quarter and stretching the lead to as many as 27.
At the final buzzer, it was the Bruins on top 76-51 over the Golden Bears. With today's win, the Bruins are now 5-9 on the season.
Keely Price led all players with 23 points and eight rebounds. Wylder was close behind with 20 points, 18 of which came from outside the arc, and four rebounds.
Following the game, assistant coach Sha'Ron Brunson said, "this was probably our best rebounding game of the season. This has been something we've been trying to emphasize. We also shot the ball well tonight. These were two of the bright spots we executed well on tonight."
When speaking of hitting her collegiate milestone, Wylder said, "I was really happy to hit that three and do it surrounded by my team and family."
Up next, the Bruins host Warren Wilson College at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Davis Field House.
