Comeback Falls Short in 72-67 Loss to Wildcats

A fourth quarter comeback falls short as the Bob Jones University Bruins fall in a 72-67 loss to Johnson & Wales University Tuesday night.

As today's game got underway in the Davis Field House, the Bruins struggled in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Johnson & Wales took an early 13-0 lead before Savannah Taylor got the Bruins on the board with 2:20 left in the quarter. The Bruins scored six straight to get in the contest. At the end of the first 10 minutes of play, it was 15-9 in favor of the Wildcats.

Back-to-back layups by Keely Price and Faith Hayward cut the deficit to just two points at the start of the second quarter. Halfway through the frame, the Wildcats extended back to a double digit lead, but the Bruins continued to work and as the two teams went into halftime they trailed by five, 27-22.

Despite having their best field goal percentage of the game so far, the Bruins were unable to keep up with the Wildcats as their lead continued to grow in the third quarter.

Heading into final 10 minutes of play, the Bruins looked to close the game out strong. Jenna Brooks got the scoring started with an opening layup. The Bruins then went on a nine-point scoring run to pull within four points of the Wildcats. With just under three minutes remaining, Brooks sank a three-pointer before another basket by Hayward saw the scoreboard read 63-61, Johnson & Wales. It remained close through the rest of the game, but the comeback fell short with the Bruins falling 72-67 to the Wildcats.

Five Bruins finished the game in double figures. Jenna Brooks led the way with 15 followed closely by Keely Price with 14 points. Anna Layne Wylder contributed 12 points with Faith Hayward and Savannah Taylor each adding ten.

"We had better execution in the second half of today's game," said Assistant Coach Sha'Ron Brunson. "They made some tough shots down the stretch, but once we clean up a few things. we'll overcome those mistakes that hurt us."

Up next, the Bruins travel to Florida for a Saturday night contest against NCCAA South Region rivals Pensacola Christian College.
