The Bob Jones University golf team opened its spring slate with a match play exhibition at Greer Golf Club against Montreat College on Tuesday.
"Though the final result from today's exhibition match with Montreat said that we lost by a score of 4-3, there were many victories throughout the day that gave us a positive outlook for the Spring season," said Head Coach Denny Scott.
Seven individual matches were on the course with each match worth one point. Matches that were tied after 18 holes give 1/2 point to each team. The team who scored at least four points won the overall team competition.
The first points of the match came from freshman DJ Waller in a convincing win with a large margin at six and five. Brayden Joyner found himself down by two with only a few holes remaining. He found a way to win the 16th and 18th holes to add a half point for the Bruins. Eli DeVaughn pulled to a lead on the 16th hole and parred on the 17th and 18th to win his match and add a point to the Bruins score. After a competitive 18 holes, Brandon Autry and the top golfer from the Cavaliers conceded birdie putts on the final hole to finish their match tied, earning a half point for each side.
At the end of match play, it was Montreat College on top 4-3.
Following the event, Scott said, "even though some upperclassmen struggled early in their matches, they finished strong and set a good example for the younger guys. Our underclassmen demonstrated some great potential for future success and had some outstanding highlights."
"Our two teams are pretty evenly matched, and the 'iron sharpening iron' competition today will definitely help both teams to be prepared for upcoming tournaments this Spring. We are thankful for the great relationship we have with Montreat's golf team and how we can partner and "strive together" in a match like this to sharpen our skills and our focus."
Up next, the Bruins will compete at the Pioneers Spring Invitational hosted by Spartanburg Methodist College on February 23-24.
