The Bob Jones University Bruins baseball team split their Saturday doubleheader against Trinity College of Jacksonville, winning 13-2 in game one before dropping the second game 5-0 at Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina.
Saturday's doubleheader was the second series of the season between the Bruins and Eagles, with the Eagles sweeping the first series in Jacksonville, Florida at the start of the year.
As game one got underway, the Eagles struck first in the third inning. The Bruins answered in the fourth inning when Cody Kirkpatrick lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
The Eagles regained the lead in the fifth on a solo home run, but that advantage was short-lived. Bob Jones responded with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Derek Farley drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the tying run before Evan Johnson delivered a two-run single to give the Bruins a 4-2 edge.
Taking advantage of walks, hit batters, and an error by the Eagles in the sixth inning, the Bruins sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on zero hits to stretch their lead to 13-2.
The lead held through the top of the seventh inning as the Bruins pulled out the 13-2 victory.
Pitcher Tillman Padgett earned the win, tossing six innings while allowing two runs on eight hits, before teammate Jason Quillin closed out the game.
After a brief break, the Bruins were back on the field for game two. Trinity wasted little time getting on the board with an early run in the first inning. In the third, the Eagles added two more runs to move ahead 3-0.
Bob Jones threatened in the fifth inning, putting runners on and loading the bases after a hit-by-pitch and a single from Mannix Crawford, but the Bruins were unable to capitalize.
The Eagles added two more runs on the board in the final inning to move to a 5-0 lead.
Pitcher Mackenzie Ritter took the loss for the Bruins, allowing three runs over five innings. Noah Ezell came in as relief for the final two frames.
With today's results, the Bruins now sit at 5-8 on the season.
Following the game, Head Coach Kyle Morrison said, "Padgett did a great job in game one, and by God's grace, he kept us in the game until we had that big inning in the sixth. The game plan on pitcher Brodie Nichols was to hit him early and do our best to not let him get comfortable."
Morrison continued saying, "in game two, it didn't feel like the focus was there with the at bats, and Trinity did a great job with two out hitting to get some runs across the dish early. It's hard facing an All-American in Trinity's Jacob Brigman, so you can't be easy outs. Unfortunately, we had roughly eight or nine fly balls and pop-ups in game two, and we made it very easy for their defense."
The Bruins are back on the field with a mid-week doubleheader on March 10 against Defiance College at Conestee Park in Greenville, South Carolina.
